Overview KfW
In 1997 KfW started its engagement in the education sector in Yemen. Since then schools in the governorates of Ibb, Abyan, Hajja and Marib are renovated or newly constructed. Communities in the targeted districts are highly involved in the planning process and take responsibilities to ensure a sustainable use and maintenance when schools are finally opened. Till 2009 3.100 class rooms will be available for 140.000 pupils.

In the future, KfW will strengthen its cooperation in the education sector through its share in the Basic Education Development Project (BEDP) as well as in the Secondary Education Development and Girls' Access Project (SEDGAP) and an investment of 32 million Euros. The programme supports quality improvement in the Yemeni education sector.
