Welcome to GEIP!

The General Education Improvement Program (GEIP) is a Yemeni-German development program for the enhancement of the education sector in Yemen. Its goal is to improve school enrolment rates, school quality and pupils’ achievements.

GEIP is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in a joint program with the Kreditbank für Wiederaufbau/ German Development Bank (KfW). Together they carry out their work on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

GIZ is managing the technical components of GEIP. Through its professional advisory services at ministry, governorate, district and school levels, GIZ supports capacity development for long-term and sustainable development in the education sector in Yemen.

KfW is managing the financial cooperation in the field of education. It supports the construction and rehabilitation of school buildings in Sana’a and contributes financially to the efforts of the Social Fund for Development in the field of education, as well as to the multi-donor funded projects Basic Education Development Project (BEDP) and the Secondary Education Development and Girls Access Project (SEDGAP).

GEIP works in close coordination and cooperation with the Yemeni Ministry of Education and is fully aligned with the National Basic Education Development Strategy (BEDS 2003-2015) and the National Secondary Education Development Strategy (NSEDS 2007-2015). It also closely coordinates and actively participates with the local development partners group. The above named strategies promote general basic and secondary education characterized by equity, justice, good quality, and diversification. The end aim is to enable graduates to either pursue higher education or to find gainful employment. GEIP has been developed to support the translation of these strategies into a concrete practice. Launched in 2002 as BEIP (Basic Education Improvement Program), GEIP is currently implementing the fourth phase of the program, which runs through December 2013.
